There's rich information hidden in the way our fingers interact with smart devices that allows for motor impairment tracking and potentially early detection of neurodegenerative disease onset.

Our work focuses on development of algorithms to detect the subtle psychomotor impairment typical of Parkinson's Disease by analysing the timing of keystrokes. No information of what is being typed is captured and can happen on daily use devices, no hardware changes required.

  • Prevalence will double by 2040 because of population's aging
  • More than 10 years before the diagnosis brain cells start to die
  • 30% of the cases are not initially identified

 

What if we could detect and monitor Parkinson's Disease in the general population?

Improved screening and treatment monitoring at this stage could increase life expectancy, reduce the likelihood of hip fractures and admissions to skilled nursing facilities and increase the quality of life for Parkinson's suffereres

What if we could detect Parkinson's earlier than the clinical diagnosis?

It will enable future neuro-protective treatments to significantly slow the disease, as indicated by experimental studies.

What if we could detect and monitor neurodegenerative diseases transparently?

The population to screen and follow is extremely large. We need a measurement that has high compliance, can be performed continuously, can be massively deployed and does not interfere with the daily workflow.
